San Diego in Summer
Comic-Con, leopard sharks, Del Mar races, and 70 miles of beach — your complete 2026 summer guide.

San Diego in summer is exactly what it looks like on the postcards — sunny, warm, packed with things happening, and full of people who flew from somewhere cold and can't stop smiling. The coastal temperature sits in the low-to-mid 70s, the ocean warms up enough to swim without a wetsuit, and the city stacks events back-to-back from June through September.
The honest trade-off: it's the most crowded and most expensive time to visit. Beach parking fills by 9 AM on summer weekends. Hotels peak. But if you plan around it — arrive early, avoid the worst congestion weekends, and know which experiences to prioritize — summer San Diego is genuinely hard to beat.

Summer-Only Experiences
These are things you can only do in San Diego in summer — or that are significantly better in summer.
Snorkel with Leopard Sharks at La Jolla Shores
Every summer from June through September, hundreds of leopard sharks gather in the shallow warm water off La Jolla Shores to feed and rest. These sharks are completely harmless to humans — they're filter feeders — and you can swim directly alongside them in water 3–8 feet deep, right from the beach. No tour, no boat, no cost. Just snorkel gear. This is one of the most unique wildlife encounters in California and almost nobody outside of San Diego knows it exists.
Best months: July and August. Go on a calm morning before the wind picks up. Snorkel rentals available at shops on Avenida de la Playa.
A Day at the Del Mar Races
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is one of the most beautiful horse racing venues in the country, sitting right on the edge of the ocean. Opening Day (July 17) has a famous hat contest that draws crowds in spectacular headwear. Even if you don't care about racing, an afternoon at Del Mar with food, drinks, and the coastal setting is a genuinely great San Diego summer day. Tickets are affordable and the energy is unlike anything else in the city.
Season runs July 17–September 7. COASTER train from downtown San Diego stops at the track — avoid driving on busy race days.
Outdoor Concerts at the Rady Shell
The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park is San Diego's outdoor waterfront concert venue — right on San Diego Bay in Embarcadero Marina Park. The San Diego Symphony runs their full summer season here, mixing classical concerts, film screenings with live orchestra, and guest artists. On a warm summer night with the bay behind you and the city lights across the water, it's one of the best settings for live music you'll find anywhere in California.

Summer Tips from Locals
- ✓Arrive at the beach before 9 AM on weekends: Parking fills fast at Mission Beach, La Jolla Shores, and Coronado. Early arrivals get spots and prime real estate before the crowds hit.
- ✓Don't visit Comic-Con week unless you're going: If you're not attending Comic-Con (July 22–26), avoid downtown San Diego that week entirely. Hotels are $400+/night and Gaslamp is impossible to navigate. The rest of the city is normal.
- ✓September is the local secret: Crowds drop, prices drop, ocean temperatures peak, and the weather is identical to August. Locals call it 'Second Summer.' If you have any flexibility on dates, September beats July.
- ✓Take the COASTER to Del Mar: The COASTER commuter train runs from downtown San Diego directly to the Del Mar racetrack. Driving and parking on big race days is a miserable experience. The train is not.
- ✓Morning marine layer is not a sign of a bad day: June Gloom clears almost every day. Beaches that look gray and cold at 9 AM are usually sunny and warm by noon. Don't let morning clouds change your plans.
