La Jolla Cove coastal walk in summer San Diego

San Diego in summer is exactly what it looks like on the postcards — sunny, warm, packed with things happening, and full of people who flew from somewhere cold and can't stop smiling. The coastal temperature sits in the low-to-mid 70s, the ocean warms up enough to swim without a wetsuit, and the city stacks events back-to-back from June through September.

The honest trade-off: it's the most crowded and most expensive time to visit. Beach parking fills by 9 AM on summer weekends. Hotels peak. But if you plan around it — arrive early, avoid the worst congestion weekends, and know which experiences to prioritize — summer San Diego is genuinely hard to beat.

Summer-Only Experiences

These are things you can only do in San Diego in summer — or that are significantly better in summer.

Snorkel with Leopard Sharks at La Jolla Shores

Every summer from June through September, hundreds of leopard sharks gather in the shallow warm water off La Jolla Shores to feed and rest. These sharks are completely harmless to humans — they're filter feeders — and you can swim directly alongside them in water 3–8 feet deep, right from the beach. No tour, no boat, no cost. Just snorkel gear. This is one of the most unique wildlife encounters in California and almost nobody outside of San Diego knows it exists.

Best months: July and August. Go on a calm morning before the wind picks up. Snorkel rentals available at shops on Avenida de la Playa.

A Day at the Del Mar Races

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is one of the most beautiful horse racing venues in the country, sitting right on the edge of the ocean. Opening Day (July 17) has a famous hat contest that draws crowds in spectacular headwear. Even if you don't care about racing, an afternoon at Del Mar with food, drinks, and the coastal setting is a genuinely great San Diego summer day. Tickets are affordable and the energy is unlike anything else in the city.

Season runs July 17–September 7. COASTER train from downtown San Diego stops at the track — avoid driving on busy race days.

Outdoor Concerts at the Rady Shell

The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park is San Diego's outdoor waterfront concert venue — right on San Diego Bay in Embarcadero Marina Park. The San Diego Symphony runs their full summer season here, mixing classical concerts, film screenings with live orchestra, and guest artists. On a warm summer night with the bay behind you and the city lights across the water, it's one of the best settings for live music you'll find anywhere in California.

Summer Tips from Locals

  • Arrive at the beach before 9 AM on weekends: Parking fills fast at Mission Beach, La Jolla Shores, and Coronado. Early arrivals get spots and prime real estate before the crowds hit.
  • Don't visit Comic-Con week unless you're going: If you're not attending Comic-Con (July 22–26), avoid downtown San Diego that week entirely. Hotels are $400+/night and Gaslamp is impossible to navigate. The rest of the city is normal.
  • September is the local secret: Crowds drop, prices drop, ocean temperatures peak, and the weather is identical to August. Locals call it 'Second Summer.' If you have any flexibility on dates, September beats July.
  • Take the COASTER to Del Mar: The COASTER commuter train runs from downtown San Diego directly to the Del Mar racetrack. Driving and parking on big race days is a miserable experience. The train is not.
  • Morning marine layer is not a sign of a bad day: June Gloom clears almost every day. Beaches that look gray and cold at 9 AM are usually sunny and warm by noon. Don't let morning clouds change your plans.

San Diego Summer — Common Questions

What is the weather like in San Diego in summer?
Coastal San Diego in summer has highs in the low-to-mid 70s°F with evenings in the mid-60s — genuinely comfortable beach weather. Inland areas (Mission Valley, El Cajon, the Zoo Safari Park) hit the mid-80s to low 90s. June often brings 'June Gloom' — marine layer that keeps coastal mornings gray and cool before burning off by noon. July and August are sunnier and warmer. San Diego rarely sees temperatures above 85°F on the coast.
What is June Gloom in San Diego?
June Gloom is a marine layer — thick coastal fog and low clouds — that sits over San Diego's beaches most mornings in May and June, sometimes lingering into early July. It typically burns off by 11 AM–noon, leaving sunny afternoons. If you're visiting for beach time, plan outdoor activities from mid-morning onward. June Gloom is mostly a coastal phenomenon — inland San Diego is often sunny while the beaches are gray.
Is San Diego crowded in summer?
Yes — summer is peak tourist season, especially July 4th week and August. Beach parking fills by 9 AM on weekends. Hotels are at their most expensive. The San Diego Zoo, USS Midway, and Balboa Park see their highest foot traffic. Comic-Con week (late July) compresses downtown hotel inventory dramatically. If you want San Diego's great weather with fewer crowds and lower prices, visit in September or October — water is still warm and the city breathes again after Labor Day.
Can you swim in the ocean in San Diego in summer?
Yes — summer is the best time to swim in San Diego. Ocean temperatures reach 68–72°F from July through September, warm enough to swim comfortably without a wetsuit. The water is warmest at Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and La Jolla Shores. Always swim within lifeguard-patrolled zones and watch for rip current flags, which are posted daily at staffed beaches.
What are the major events in San Diego in summer 2026?
Major summer 2026 events include: Comic-Con International (July 22–26, badges sold out); Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Summer Racing Season (July 17–September 7, opening day hat contest July 17); La Jolla Music Society SummerFest (July 31–August 29 at The Conrad); SeaWorld Summer Spectacular Concert Series (Saturdays June 13–August 8 at Bayside Amphitheater); San Diego Symphony at the Rady Shell (outdoor summer season at Jacobs Park, July–September).
Can you snorkel with leopard sharks in San Diego?
Yes — from June through September, leopard sharks congregate in the shallow warm waters off La Jolla Shores in large numbers. They are completely harmless to humans and you can snorkel directly alongside them. No tour is required — just put on a mask and fins and wade in from the beach. The sharks are typically in water 3–8 feet deep, close to shore. This is one of the most unique wildlife experiences in California and it's free.
Is September a good time to visit San Diego?
September is arguably the best month to visit San Diego. Summer crowds thin after Labor Day while ocean temperatures stay at their peak (68–72°F), beaches are less packed, hotel rates drop significantly, and the weather stays warm and sunny. Locals call it 'Second Summer.' The leopard sharks are still at La Jolla Shores in early September, and the Del Mar Races continue through early September.
