Tijuana — The Easiest Day Trip

Tijuana is 30 minutes south and the most unique day trip from San Diego. Take the MTS Blue Line trolley to San Ysidro, walk across the border, and you're in Mexico. Avenida Revolución is the tourist spine — street tacos, Caesars restaurant (birthplace of the Caesar salad), and craft beer from Tijuana's growing brewery scene. Mercado Hidalgo is a covered market with fresh produce, cheese, and local goods.

You need a valid US passport or passport card to re-enter the US. Returning on foot via the CBX crossing at night takes 15–45 minutes depending on wait times.

Julian — Best Mountain Day Trip

Julian is a gold rush-era mountain town 1h 15min east of San Diego at 4,200 feet elevation. It's famous for apple orchards and pie — Julian Pie Company (est. 1989) and Mom's Pie House (est. 1984) are the main competitors. The Eagle and High Peak Mine offers underground gold mine tours on C Street. In fall, the apple harvest brings crowds every weekend from September through November — go mid-week if possible.
