Things To Do in San Diego — Browse by Who You're Visiting With

Whether you're here with a partner, a group of friends, young kids, or flying solo — San Diego has a version of itself built for you.

San Diego is one of the most versatile cities in the US — a relaxed beach town, a world-class zoo destination, a craft beer capital, and a romantic coastal escape all at once. Use the guides below to find exactly what fits your trip.

For Adults

San Diego for adults means Gaslamp Quarter's rooftop bars and Victorian-era restaurants, North Park's independent brewery scene, Balboa Park's 17 museums, and a harbor dinner cruise at golden hour. The USS Midway Museum alone takes 3–4 hours to explore fully. Little Italy hosts the Saturday Mercato, one of Southern California's largest farmers markets, and is lined with trattorias open late.

San Diego County has over 150 breweries — more per capita than almost any US city. Stone Brewing World Bistro, AleSmith, and Modern Times all have large taprooms worth an afternoon visit.

For Couples

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is the most romantic spot in San Diego — jagged coastal cliffs, crashing Pacific surf, and a western sky that turns orange every evening. The La Jolla coastline walk from Children's Pool to Shell Beach gives you sea lions, clear water, and a natural arch in under a mile. The Hornblower dinner cruise runs Friday and Saturday evenings on San Diego Bay — two hours with the Coronado Bridge and city skyline as your backdrop.

With Kids

The San Diego Zoo is one of the best in the world — over 12,000 animals across 3,500 species in Balboa Park. SeaWorld San Diego launched a reimagined Shark Encounter in Spring 2026. Belmont Park on Mission Beach has a 1925 wooden roller coaster still running, a wave pool, and an arcade. Mission Bay has the safest swimming for young children — fully enclosed, calm water, with kayak and pedal-boat rentals right off the shore.

Free Things To Do

San Diego's 70 miles of public beaches are entirely free — including Torrey Pines State Beach, Coronado, and La Jolla Shores. Balboa Park is free to enter, and on the first Tuesday of each month, most of its museums offer free admission to San Diego County residents. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park and the Cabrillo National Monument tide pools (on foot) cost nothing.
