When To Go in San Diego

266 sunny days a year means San Diego is almost always worth visiting. But when you go determines what you'll find — and what you'll pay.

San Diego averages 70°F year-round with a Mediterranean climate that keeps winters mild and summers breezy off the coast. The guides below cover what's happening this weekend, the best month to book, full 3- and 5-day itineraries, and where to stay.

Best Time To Visit San Diego

September and October are the best months. Summer marine layer burns off, ocean temperatures peak at 68–70°F, crowds thin after Labor Day, and hotel rates drop noticeably. June through August brings the most visitors — June Gloom keeps mornings overcast along the coast, parking at La Jolla and Coronado is scarce on weekends, and hotel prices are at their highest.

December through March is quiet and affordable. Highs hover in the low 60s, the Zoo and museums are uncrowded, and gray whale migration peaks January through March — making it the best season for whale watching.

This Weekend in San Diego

Any given San Diego weekend typically has the Little Italy Mercato on Saturday mornings (six blocks of local vendors), outdoor concerts at the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, and a Padres home game at Petco Park from April through September. The Gaslamp Artisan Market runs Saturdays and Sundays on Fifth Avenue with local art, jewelry, and food vendors.

First Time in San Diego

First-time visitors consistently underestimate how spread out San Diego is. The Zoo is in Balboa Park — not near the beach. La Jolla is 15 miles from the Gaslamp Quarter. Old Town is its own neighborhood. A car is the easiest way to cover the main areas, though downtown is walkable and the trolley connects the main corridors.
