Marathon Course — Mile by Mile

The 26.2-mile point-to-point course starts in Balboa Park and finishes in downtown San Diego. Here's what to expect at each stage.

Miles 1–3Balboa Park & HillcrestRolling hills, tree-lined

Start at 6th Ave & Quince. Early downhill through Balboa Park, then into Hillcrest's commercial strip. Crowds are thick here — great energy to settle into your pace.

Miles 4–8North Park & Normal HeightsGentle rollers

The block-party section. Normal Heights throws some of the best spectator energy of the race. Bands on nearly every corner. Stay conservative — it's easy to go out too fast.

Miles 9–12East San Diego & University HeightsFlatter, residential

The course quiets down slightly here. Focus on fueling — take gels and electrolytes at aid stations in this range to bank energy for the back half.

Miles 13–16Mission Hills & Old TownMostly flat, slight downhill

Half marathoners finish around mile 13. Marathon runners continue through Mission Hills. Old Town San Diego brings a huge crowd surge — use it to reset mentally at the midpoint.

Miles 17–20Linda Vista & Mission ValleyFlat, industrial stretch

This is the quiet stretch. Sea World Dr and Friars Rd can feel exposed and long. Maintain form. Seeing the miles tick by here is a mental win.

Miles 21–22Hotel Circle & Mission ValleyFlat

You're in the 'home stretch' mentally, but the hardest mile is still coming. Stay disciplined — don't surge yet.

Miles 23–24Highway 163The climb — ~230 ft gain in ~1 mile

The defining challenge. Highway 163 northbound ramp is a steep, sustained climb. Shorten your stride, pump your arms, and don't blow up. The reward is a long downhill run into downtown.

Miles 25–26.2Downtown San Diego & FinishDownhill to flat finish

The descent off Hwy 163 into downtown is a reward for surviving mile 23. Turn onto Ash St and race to the finish at Union St. The crowd here is massive.

Half Marathon Course

The 13.1-mile half marathon shares the same start at Balboa Park and follows the marathon route through Hillcrest, North Park, Normal Heights, and into Mission Hills before peeling off to a separate finish near Old Town.

Spectator Guide — Best Spots to Cheer

The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon route passes through some of San Diego's most walkable neighborhoods. Here are the four best spectator zones.

Miles 1–3

Hillcrest

Easy parking on side streets, multiple viewing spots along University Ave. Crowds are energetic and the neighborhood puts on a show.

Tip: Park on normal streets before 5:30 AM road closures.

Miles 4–8

Normal Heights

The block-party section. Adams Ave is packed with spectators, bands, and general celebration. The best atmosphere on course.

Tip: This neighborhood has the best vibes of the race. Arrive early to get a good spot on Adams Ave.

Miles 13–14

Old Town San Diego

Perfect spot to catch your runner at the halfway point and still have time to drive to the finish. Old Town State Historic Park is nearby.

Tip: Grab breakfast at a nearby cafe while you wait — Old Town has great spots.

Finish Line
