San Diego 5-Day Itinerary: The Complete Week Plan
Last updated: May 13, 2026
Five days in San Diego is enough to experience the city deeply — major attractions, coastal scenery, neighborhood food culture, and still have room for a day trip. This plan is built to minimize transit time and maximize variety across five distinct San Diego experiences.
Day 1: Balboa Park + Downtown Waterfront
Morning (8:30am): Arrive at Balboa Park early to secure parking. Walk the main Prado and visit one or two museums — the Museum of Us and the Natural History Museum are the strongest starting choices. If you arrive on a Sunday morning, the free Spreckels Organ Pavilion concert runs at 2pm and is worth planning around.
Midday: Choose one anchor activity. Option A is a full afternoon at the San Diego Zoo, which sits adjacent to Balboa Park and easily fills 3-4 hours. Option B is continuing through additional museums and the park's gardens if you prefer a slower pace before a longer evening.
Evening: Drive or rideshare to the downtown waterfront. Walk the Embarcadero at sunset — the aircraft carrier and harbor views are particularly good from the north end near the Maritime Museum. Dinner in the Gaslamp Quarter or Little Italy, both within a short walk of the waterfront.
Day 2: La Jolla + Torrey Pines
Morning (7:30am): Drive to Torrey Pines State Reserve. The Guy Fleming Trail offers clifftop ocean views in under 45 minutes. The Razor Point Loop adds another 30-45 minutes and includes dramatic sandstone formations above the Pacific. Go early — parking fills by 9am on weekends.
Midday: Drive 10 minutes south to La Jolla Cove. Snorkel the protected marine reserve, watch sea lions at Children's Pool, and walk the cliff path. Lunch in La Jolla village — the main strip has options from casual to sit-down.
Afternoon: Optional addition: Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution ($25 adults, 1-2 hours) or a drive up to Mount Soledad National Veterans Memorial for panoramic views. Both are within 10 minutes of La Jolla Cove.
Evening: Dinner in La Jolla for a higher-end option, or drive south to North Park for more casual independent restaurants.
Day 3: Coronado + USS Midway
Morning: Take the ferry from Broadway Pier to Coronado ($7 each way, runs every 30-60 minutes). Bike rentals are available on the island — the Silver Strand path and the beach-front boulevard are both excellent. Spend the morning on Coronado Beach, consistently rated among the best beaches on the West Coast.
Midday: Ferry back to the mainland (or drive the Coronado Bridge if you have a car). Lunch in Little Italy — North India Street and West Fir Street have high concentrations of restaurants.
Afternoon: USS Midway Museum on the Embarcadero. Budget 2-4 hours for the self-guided audio tour, which covers the full ship including flight deck, hangar bay, and berthing quarters. One of the best military museums on the West Coast.
Evening: Walk back along the Embarcadero at sunset. Dinner options include the Seaport Village waterfront area or a return to the Gaslamp Quarter.
Day 4: North Park + Craft Breweries or Safari Park (choose one)
Option A: North Park + Hillcrest Cultural Day
Morning: If visiting on a Sunday, the North Park Farmers Market runs on 30th Street. Otherwise, breakfast at one of the neighborhood's independent cafés.
Midday: Walk into Hillcrest — the adjacent LGBTQ+ neighborhood with one of San Diego's strongest independent restaurant concentrations. University Avenue has the most variety.
Afternoon: Craft brewery route through North Park's brewery district. Strong stops include North Park Beer Co., Fall Brewing, and Modern Times (now Juneshine). All are walkable from each other.
Evening: Dinner at one of North Park's independent restaurants. The density of quality options on 30th Street and University Avenue makes this one of the best dining neighborhoods in the city.
Option B: San Diego Zoo Safari Park (full day)
The Safari Park in Escondido is 35 miles north of downtown — a separate experience from the main Zoo, covering a wide open savanna habitat. The Elephant Valley expansion (2026) significantly increases the scale of the African elephant habitat. Open savanna tram tours cover areas inaccessible on foot.
Plan a full day for this option — it's not worth combining with other activities given the drive time. Return to San Diego in the evening for dinner.
Day 5: Day Trip or SeaWorld (choose one)
Option A: Tijuana Day Trip (most adventurous)
Take the Blue Line trolley from downtown to San Ysidro (last US stop, ~45 minutes, $2.50). Walk across the border or use the CBX bridge. On the Tijuana side, Uber is cheap and reliable. Key areas: Zona Gastronómica for craft tacos and local restaurants, Mercado Hidalgo for produce and artisan goods, Avenida Revolución for shopping and street life.
Plan to return by 5pm to avoid peak border wait times. No car recommended — the trolley and Uber combination is faster and eliminates vehicle border complications. US passport or passport card required.

Option B: Julian Day Trip (1h15m northeast)
Julian is a mountain mining town turned apple-harvest destination in the Cuyamaca Mountains. The drive up Highway 78 or 79 is scenic. Best for apple cider, fresh pie at Mom's Pies or Julian Pie Company, and short hikes in the surrounding mountains. Apple harvest season peaks September-October — good year-round otherwise for the village atmosphere.
Option C: SeaWorld San Diego
SeaWorld's 2026 Shark Encounter expansion adds a significant new immersive exhibit alongside the existing coasters and marine animal presentations. Good choice for families or visitors who haven't been to a theme park yet on the trip. Budget a full day.

Planning Notes
Keep each day geographically clustered to reduce transit time. The itinerary above is structured so that each day operates in a distinct zone of the city — Balboa Park/downtown, north coastal, central bay, inland neighborhoods, and out-of-city. This minimizes the cross-city drives that erode vacation time in San Diego.
The Zoo and Safari Park are both full-day commitments — do not combine them on the same day or plan other anchor activities alongside either. If visiting both, dedicate Day 1 to the Zoo and Day 4 to the Safari Park, dropping the North Park brewery option.
For families with younger children, swap Day 5's Tijuana option for SeaWorld or LEGOLAND (Carlsbad, 35 miles north), and consider moving the brewery afternoon on Day 4 to the Balboa Park carousel and children's museum area.
Frequently Asked Questions: 5 Days in San Diego
Is 5 days enough to see San Diego?
Yes. Five days covers all major areas plus a day trip if you group attractions geographically and stay disciplined about one anchor per day. Three days is enough for a first-trip highlights tour. Five days allows deeper neighborhood exploration, slower coastal time, and the room for a day trip that three days doesn't allow.
How much money do you need for 5 days in San Diego?
Budget $100-200 per day per person for activities and food, on top of accommodation. A Zoo or SeaWorld day runs $60-80 per adult in admission alone. Many coastal and hiking activities are free. A comfortable mid-range 5-day trip typically runs $500-900 per person in activity and food spending.
What is the best base for a 5-day San Diego trip?
Downtown or the Gaslamp Quarter offers the most transit flexibility — walkable evenings, easy waterfront access, and reasonable drive times to all major attractions. Mission Beach or Pacific Beach works better if beach time is the primary goal and you don't mind slightly longer drives to Balboa Park and downtown anchors.
